What Is a Heat Pump Hot Water System, and Is It Worth It in Perth?
The Willows team recently headed out to rural Karnup to replace an ageing electric hot water system with an energy efficient iStore heat pump. It is a job we are doing more and more across Baldivis, Rockingham, Mandurah and Perth’s southern suburbs, and it usually comes with the same few questions. Here are the answers.

What is a heat pump hot water system?
A heat pump is a type of electric hot water system that heats water using the warmth in the surrounding air, rather than heating it directly with an element. A fan draws air across a refrigerant, which absorbs the heat, and a compressor moves that heat into the water stored in the tank.
Think of it as a fridge working in reverse. A fridge removes heat from the inside and pushes it out. A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and puts it into your water.
How is it different from a standard electric hot water system?
A traditional electric storage system uses an element, a bit like a kettle, to heat every litre of water. A heat pump moves heat that is already in the air instead of creating it, so it needs far less electricity to deliver the same hot water. Same hot showers, smarter way of getting there.
Do heat pumps work well in Perth?
Yes. Heat pumps perform best in mild to warm air temperatures, and Perth’s climate suits them well for most of the year. They still work on cool winter mornings, just a little less efficiently than in summer.
Are there any downsides?
A few things are worth knowing before you choose one:
Upfront cost is usually higher than a basic electric storage unit, with the payback coming through lower power bills over time
Placement matters, because the unit has a fan and compressor that make a low hum, so it is best kept away from bedroom windows
Space and airflow are needed around the unit, so tight or enclosed spots may not suit
We look at all of this on site before recommending anything.
Are there rebates for heat pump hot water systems?
Eligible heat pump installations can attract small-scale technology certificates (STCs) under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which reduce the upfront price. The value depends on the model and your location, and we can confirm what applies to your installation when we quote.
When should I think about upgrading?
The best time is before your current system fails, not after. If your electric hot water system is 10 years or older, is struggling to keep up, or is showing rust or leaks, it is worth looking at your options while you still have hot water. Our repair or replace guide covers the warning signs in more detail.
